What's your background?
I'm a 25-year-old Indian American woman who grew up in New Hampshire and now lives in Palo Alto, California. I am on a leave of absence from a job as a Machine Learning engineer at a startup. I love to sing and talk.
What's your definition of self-care or what does self-care mean to you?
Self-care means taking care of logistics in your life, keeping your space so it feels comfortable, and engaging in rest/play that enriches you.
Tell me your story. How do you practice self-care in your life?
I struggle with it a lot but mostly treat myself to food/clothing and going to therapy. Ideally, though, I wish I did more practical helpful things that aren't glamorous sounding per se but will ensure that I'm caring for myself properly so I feel self-sufficient.
What makes taking care of yourself so important to you?
When you're able to take care of yourself, you can contribute more to others' lives and have better relationships. You won't show up to the emotional plate starving because you've already accounted for yourself; others are just a very welcome addition and fulfilling your need for intimacy/connection, not providing for your basic needs.
If you had advice to give someone else on practicing self-care, what would it be?
First and foremost, take care of your emotional and physical health. The most important first component is to start caring about your own life. :) For me, the most I struggle with is that I don't care for myself properly, so it makes me resentful/needy in relationships.
